PRESS RELEASE: Saab receives order from Canada for the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon

This announcement coincides with Saab’s participation at CANSEC 2025, Canada’s largest defence and security trade show, taking place in Ottawa on May 28th and 29th.
The order, which includes the Carl-Gustaf M4 weapon and Fire Control Device (FCD) 558, further strengthens the long-standing relationship between Saab and Canada. With this acquisition, Canada joins a growing number of nations equipping their forces with the latest generation of the Carl-Gustaf system.
“This order is a clear example of Saab’s modern, combat-proven capability being in demand by our customers around the world. Canada is an important customer for Saab, and we are proud to continue supporting the Canadian Armed Forces with systems that enhance their operational effectiveness,” says Simon Carroll, President of Saab Canada.
The Carl-Gustaf system is a globally trusted solution, used by more than 40 countries. Carl-Gustaf M4, the latest version of the system, features a lightweight design, integrated electronics, and compatibility with future intelligent sighting systems and programmable ammunition. It enables soldiers to respond quickly to a wide range of battlefield challenges including armour, structures, and personnel.
Noah Note: This is a long time coming. The M4 has been on the docket for several years now and was supposed to be pushed ahead after we donated stocks of M2 to Ukraine. This deal is valued at $7.7M although we dont get a true breakdown of what's included or what that looks like.
There have been internal.disvussions in replacing the Carl G with something else. As far as I know these talks died out a while ago, ad the Carl G is the near perfect weapons.for its class, cheap, easy to use, loads of munitions that are already produced here and with the FCD558 a highly accurate and dangerous weapon.
Its hard to get past all the benefits it brings. The fact is that not much can be called better in the same class to justify it, certainly not for us. It fits perfectly between the M72EC and whatever the wider army selects for its ATGM requirements in the future, which im sure theyll get around to eventually.
Speaking of that, many people have asked me if SPIKE will come to the wider army. It certainly is possible. Under the current demands it would come down to either SPIKE or AKERON, as theyre the only reliable fifth-generation ATGM we have access too.
SPIKE is the most co.mon ATGM among our allies, bar none. That alone makes it, or Eurospike if you see them as a difference, a highly desirable system for commonality alone. So SPIKE, while not garunteed as of now is certainly a likely option, if not the most likely.
