Terma A/S, a global leader in surveillance radar technology has partnered with Sperry Marine, a well-recognized manufacturer and service provider of marine navigation systems, to deliver the SCANTER 4603 and SCANTER 6002 series of naval surveillance radar to Seaspan Shipyards for the upcoming Canadian Coast Guard’s Multi-Purpose Icebreaker and Polar Icebreaker Programs.

Terma’s SCANTER series of surveillance radar provides comprehensive surface surveillance and medium to high level air coverage. Its advanced design ensures the detection and tracking of very small targets in extreme northern environments and harsh Arctic weather conditions. The vessels being constructed at Seaspan Shipyards in Vancouver are set to play a vital role in supporting the Coast Guard’s multiple mission throughout the country, enabling search and rescue, emergency response as well as sovereignty protection.

Noah Note: This move was hardly unexpected, but nice to see some confirmation. Obviously this was made before the recent push for moving the CCG but the Scanter radars will be more than capable enough for what should be expected of the Icebreaking fleet.
The Scanter 6002 is already in service on board the Dewolfe-class. Its a fine system, very capable for what its supposed to do. I think it gets a lot of hate being tied to what many see as a lack of capability on the AOPS.
It's not the 6002s fault that people ask things of it that it isnt meant to do. It's popular for a reason! I think people forget how common the 6002 is among our partners and allies. It's a great, affordable system. Thats why we see it integrated into things like the upcoming Type 26 for the Royal Navy.
The 4603 is a bit less known, and less popular. It's designed with smaller vessels like OPV and Corvettes in mind, providing surface coverage out to 96nmi and limited air coverage up to 40,000ft.
I cant say I know much about it. It just doesnt pop up much. It isnt that widely-used around. Ill have to do some research I guess! It will give the MPI fleet a decent little surveillance capability, exactly what we would want out of them without going to far.
There still room to see the Polars get a more capable radar, but I dont think now that it is in the books. We are likely to see the Northern fleet conform around the Scanter radars.
